Our father (LJB) transcribed his dad's (LBB) journal from his time as a mariner. He included a helpful  Abbreviation Key: 

OBS             =     Observation

DR                =    Dead Reckoning

N                   =       Nance (our grandmother)

AN                =    Aunt Nell Nugent (a Carney, Grandma Butler's sister)

Leo                =    Fr. Leo Butler, SJ, Dad's brother

Colligan        =    River that flows from Dungarvan and separates the village from Abbeyside

DS?              =    police authority of some sort

Dad               =    frequently abbreviated

Dun = Dungarven (our grandmother's hometown)

A first note in not dated:

Stopped at Foleys in Maptown. Dragged the Mara stern tonight. Company tonight and as a result went to bed about 1:00 a.m.

Perhaps from preceding the first dated note of August 11, 1915.
